Still have no gun, should I stock up on ammo now??

I still have not signed up for a pistol permit or a training class, but I am wondering if it is a good idea to stock up on ammo now.

I have read that an AK-47 is a good rifle with easily accessible ammo.
And I've read that 7.62x39 ammo is used for an AK-47, and is readily available.

Should I stock up on this ammo now while I get training to use the rifle?

And if I should, what is the best type or brand to get?

AK-47 might be cheaper than getting an AR-15, but the AK ammo is less readily available, and the AR-15 is more reliable (my opinion).

There have been numerous threads like these.
...try "search" function

What the hell.....
What is the firearm you are planning to buy going to be used for?

Bomber,

Might as well stock up while you can...ammo won't be any cheaper tomorrow.
Firearm preference is a personal thing,if you like the AK-47,then get it....or the AR-15,I believ both fill their role.

I have an AR-15 and like it,I also have 8 SKS rifles and like them.(Uses the same round as the AK-47).

Back to the main question "Should I stock up on ammo now?",,,Yes,if you know what caliber you will need then get it now.No telling what will happen tomorrow.

Hope this helps you.

I have been waiting for someone to say that - and, I will say this.........

NO - unless you are absolutely SURE you know what gun you are going to buy!

If you buy ammo for a gun, then, at the last minute, decide on something else - then you've bought a lot of ammo you can't use! So as long as you are SURE!!!!

Master_Ho,

I can see your point,however...I don't think he'd have a problem selling any 7.62x39 or .223 that he had stockpiled.Just compare last year's prices with what we pay now.

spray and pray, no way. OSOK is the way to play.

get a ruger 10/22 and a brick of 22 ammo to get familiar with rifle shooting. then sign up for a DCM class to learn how to shoot a real rifle. buy a government M-1 Garand rifle and then join a conservation club and start shooting on a regular basis with some old guys who know what they're doing. otherwise you'll be just another goof with a bunch of useless ammo.

once you've done all that, sure, get an AK. I like em fine. and an AR. draw the line for buying guns at how many fingers you've got and dont be a stockpiler.

Re: Still have no gun, should I stock up on ammo now??

M-1 Garands seem a bit on the pricey side for an old rifle. Perhaps it is the collector value? (I would like one at some point, though, I think they are neat!)

I'm going to get a .22 rifle and a SKS for starter rifles. ($150 for the SKS vs $500 for a garand.)

sks is a good starter rifle after the 22. everybody who learns as a kid learns on a 22. I did. from BSA and my pops.

buy the M1 from the government and it's less expensive than market. rack grade is $395. http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/sales.htm

it's more than neat; general patton called it the greatest battle implement ever devised.

Re: Still have no gun, should I stock up on ammo now??

:D AKs...got four of them....ARs......got two Bushmasters...Uzis.....got a Micro and a standard model.

Want to know the truth ?
If I were up against the wall on a very limited budget I would buy a plain jane Marlin 30/30 carbine. If I had a little more FRNs I would buy a good used M1 carbine.

Ammo is cheap and plentiful.
In a close quarter self defense firefight you could do a lot worse. The MI in semi automatic being the better choice, especially with a couple of extra 30 round mags ready to rock.
I agree the 30/30 has no mags...but as cheap as they are you could buy two for the price of a good used M1 and keep it loaded and ready.

.223 ? Awesome in full auto.....single shot ?....it's a good rat and squirrel gun....not enough balls to do the job. A guy with a semi AK would blow you away at long range with a FMJ round, even if he had to shoot through a car door. You would be dead. A .223 is a great close quarter tactical weapon, but on the streets it's a big disadvantage. You'd stand a better chance with the 30/30 or the MI carbine.

To answer your question........No,I would not buy ammo until I had the gun in my hand.

Re: Still have no gun, should I stock up on ammo now??

:D Anty Ep: Just read your post....after I posted.

Seems we are in total agreement...The first weapon I would grab would be my M1 and a couple of 30 round mags. Look out scumbag...here I come.
A Ruger 10/22 with a 30 round double stack mag is not too shabby either.

Love my M1

:D :D :D

Re: Still have no gun, should I stock up on ammo now??

here's a list of ten weapons that it would be reasonable to aquire in order of when you should learn to use them.

1. 22 rifle. ruger 10/22 ok.
2. M-1 garand or a 308 battle rifle like M-14 or FAL
3. AR 15
4. AK 47
5. Mauser 98K or any mauser type hunting gun
6. 30-30 lever type

one shotgun. rem 970 or ruger 500/590. skip the autos.

three hand guns.
1. 38 spl revolver type
2. hicap 9mm auto type
3. 1911 type

Once you've got those learned and practiced, and a decent supply of ammo laid up, then screw around with the other stuff. depending on how much time and money you got, that should take you a couple years or so. time to hop off the net and into the "gun culture." read guns and ammo, shotgun news, go to gun shows and join a conservation club. do IPSC or IDPA once you're down to number 10 there.
